What is Reiki?

reikiReiki means ‘Universal Energy’ and is an original method of healing developed in the 20th century by Mikao Usui in Japan..

Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. It is known as ‘ki’ in Japan, ‘chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India. Acupuncture, T’ai Chi and Yoga are based on the free flow of this energy.

Reiki’s natural healing energy works to promote the body’s regenerative self healing ability.

Who can benefit from Reiki?

Reiki can help anyone suffering from:

  • Stress or tension
  • May accelerate healing of physical problems
  • Balance the emotions
  • Support positive personal change such as improving the diet, taking more rest, exercise or leisure time.

It is a gentle energy and may safely be used on anyone including the newborn, pregnant women, surgical patients, the frail and elderly alongside conventional medicine or natural remedies.

What to expect during a treatment.

The practitioner will make the client comfortable on a couch, in a warm, comfortable, peaceful environment. The treatment is carried out with the client fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands gently in a series of positions, on or over the body and the client’s system draws in as much Reiki as is needed using it in whatever way is appropriate at that time. Reiki is deeply relaxing, has a calming effect and eases stress. It is always best to rest for a time after the treatment and to drink plenty of water to help the body to detox. The energy continues to work and the beneficial effects may be felt for some days after the treatment.

How many treatments are required?

One Reiki session can make a difference but it is usually more effective to have a course of regular treatment. This might be weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on the client’s needs. The practitioner will discuss this with the client and adapt the treatment plan to suit them and their progress.

Reiki is a complementary therapy that works effectively alongside orthodox healthcare. It is not to take the place of conventional medicine and you should always consult a G.P. for an acute or infectious condition.
